“[America’s] highly original Morton Feldman (1926-1987) … will be represented by one of his most marvelous works: Three Voices , in which you will hear the voice of Joan La Barbara, the singer to whom Feldman dedicated this composition. The work dates from 1982 and is an evocation of two missing friends, the painter Philip Guston and poet Frank O’Hara (from whom the piece takes a few verses). Three Voices is a work for soprano and two speakers on each side (one part live, plus two recorded parts, also sung by La Barbara). In Feldman’s original conception, the “dead” side voices dead (Guston and O’Hara) are exchanging with the world of the living (La Barbara). The concert -in coproduction with Fondazione Musica per Roma and sponsorship of Music & Words- is enhanced by video from Benton C Bainbridge and stage and lighting design by Minou Maguna.”
